Monday afternoon brought us to our first experience with the “real” schedule. FMC’s schedule doesn’t always run Monday-Friday, so we call our days “Day 1,” “Day 2,” etc. Some classes and ensembles meet every day, like chorus or musical theater, and some run less frequently, like jazz ensemble or theory. Yesterday, all the largest groups had their first rehearsals — chorus, orchestra, band, and the musicals, both two- and four-week.
Our schedule on the first day actually ends up being pretty interesting, if you find scheduling interesting. You might imagine we would start Monday afternoon with Day 1, since it’s the first day. But since I’ve just set you up, you can guess that we do not in fact do that! Because we are still tying up some loose ends on Monday morning, we don’t start our regular schedule until the afternoon. Rather than having it be Day 1 afternoon on Monday, then Day 1 morning on Tuesday (we tried this years ago and it was REALLY hard to follow!), we actually start with Day 5 afternoon on Monday, then have Day 1 all day Tuesday.
If you’re still with me, congratulations. It takes some getting used to. But it all works out in the end. (By the way, if you’re concerned about poor Day 5 morning – don’t worry, we finally get to it on Saturday.) It always feels great once lessons, ensembles, and classes have started and we’re in the regular “groove” of camp.
